DEEWEE 002: Klanken – Drie / Twee

This is the first post of a series in which I look back at all the DEEWEE releases in a chronological order.

Since the DEEWEE studio in Ghent has catalogue number DEEWEE 001, DEEWEE 002 is the first actual release on David and Stephen’s new imprint DEEWEE.

If you didn’t know: DEEWEE – pronounced ‘dee-wee’ is a play on their last name ‘Dewaele’, a name most English speakers can’t pronounce in the correct way.

Of course, the first release on DEEWEE had to be a project of their own. Not as Soulwax or 2manydjs, but under the moniker ‘Klanken’ this release contains two tracks called ‘Drie’ (Dutch for three) and ‘Twee’ (Dutch for two)

Like all the early releases on DEEWEE, both sides of the record start with a voice saying ‘DEEWEE nul nul twee – kant A / kant B’ (which is Dutch for zero zero two side A B). And both tracks end with a locked groove.

But more interesting: there’s a distinctive ‘beep’ before the track starts. Actually it’s a bit of an easter egg that was revealed once in one of DEEWEE’s instagram stories. Every beep is 1000khz + the number of the release. So the beep on DEEWEE 002 is at 1002khz. (thanks for everyone at the Soulwax discord for helping me remember what the deal was with the beeps).

An ‘Under The Cover Version’ of ‘Twee’ was also released on streaming platforms.

DEEWEE 002 was released on September 18, 2005.
