TBT (12): Tu connais Colette?

Every Thursday I look back to the past

Back in 2002, Dave and Steph didn’t only release their groundbreaking mix CD ‘As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt II’, later in the same year they gave us this 16 minute mini mix.

It was the bonus CD of the fourth compilation of the Colette series, and for me it’s some sort of ‘encore’ for As Heard On..

Colette was a (now legendary) shop in Paris,  founded in 1997 by Colette Roussaux, and it’s considered as one of the first shops that combined high fashion and street wear.

So it’s not a surprise that the mix starts with vocals by Els Pynnoo (from Belgian band Vive La Fete), sounding like she’s wandering around in the streets of Paris while it’s raining and asks the question ‘Tu connais Colette?’ (‘Do You Know Colette?) – before the music kicks in with ‘Fashion Rules’ by Chicks On Speed.

The mixing of the tracks and choice of tracks is as brilliant as on their 2manydjs AHORS PT II album and I always felt that these tracks could have been on that album too.

Here’s the tracklist:

  1. Kreidler – Clockwerk
  2. Chicks On Speed -Fashion Rules
  3. Tiga & Zyntherius – Sunglasses At Night Felix da Housecat – Madame Hollywood
  4. Orchester Gunter Gollash – Es Steht Ein Haus In New Orleans
  5. Playgroup – Make It Happen
  6. Ladytron – Seventeen (Soulwax mix)
  7. 101 – Rock To the Beat
  8. Arthur Argent – Hold Your Head Up (Soulwax mix)
  9. LCD Soundsystem – Losing My Edge
  10. Hanayo – Joe Le Taxi
  11. Peaches – Set It Off
  12. Jeanette -Porque Te Vas

In total 10 compilations of the Colette series were released from 2001-2010. The Colette store closed in 2017.

There’s a four part documentary on the store called ‘Colette Mon Amour’
