Every Thursday I look back to the past
Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to 1993. I don’t remember where I read about this, probably in an interview with David where he said he travelled to Amsterdam back in 1993 to see the American band Raging Slab at De Melkweg.
To be honest: I had never heard of Raging Slab either, but they were active between 1987 and 2002. In 1993 they released their album ‘Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert’ on the Def American label, which was run by Rick Rubin. He also had Black Crowes on the label, and if you watch the video above you can definitely hear the same Southern blues rock based music.
As it happens, Dutch broadcaster VPRO recorded the Raging Slab concert in Amsterdam that David attended.. and you can spot the 18 year old David on the front row!
If you listen to their music, you will hear they had an influence on Dave: the blues rock, the slide guitar, even the look of the band. Just check one of their earliest performace on Belgian tv:
If you’re not interested in watching the whole Raging Slab concert, here’s the bit where you can see David in the audience:
