This is the sixt post of a series in which I look back at all the DEEWEE releases in a chronological order.
The first release by this Brazilian duo was released in January 2016.
A little bit of background information taken from their bandcamp page:
Luiz Phillipi Alves and Rodrigo Gorky are based in Sao Paulo and have notable backgrounds including touring and making music under the name Fatnotronic, producing Brazil’s pop sensation Pabllo Vittar and Rodrigo was part of the band Bonde do Rolê. The pair began their new project so they could explore different sounds. Influences range from The KLF’s book, ‘The Manual’, The Residents’ ‘Commercial’ album, Joao Donato’s ‘Quem é Quem’ and other Brazilian music.
DEEWEE’s press release at the times add that they have a fondness for hamburgers, synths and Umbanda.
Side A is an acid samba track that blends mindfulness with a 303 and has been thoroughly road tested on the Despacio Sound System.
Side B is a tight modern Balearic Beat for the slower dance floor about the (non existing) ghetto of DEEWEE’s hometown. A lovely thing.
Described by David and Stephen Dewaele, as sounding “like Stereolab in 2019 singing in Portuguese while a Batucada band performs at a Brazilian beach techno party”.
I was curious how the two Brazilians and the two Belgians met, and asked Phillipi if he wanted to share the story:
Phillipi:
” So, basically i met Rodrigo in 2006, djing in the same party. At that time he was playing all over with his indie baile funk band called “Bonde do Role”. After that gig, we never stopped hanging out and we started “Fatnotronic”
“I met Steph for the first time in 2008 at Iggor and Laima’s wedding, and Dave the year after. I think Rodrigo had met the brothers before.
Dave and Steph were coming really often to Brasil, and every time they were here, me and Rodrigo took them record shopping, to restaurants and showing them around Sao Paulo.
In 2014, they were back in Sao Paolo and Dave said “we just opened a new studio in Ghent, and we wanna work with you guys, lets schedule a date so you guys can come to the studio”.
So, in april of 2015 we came to DEEWEE for the first time and spent one week working on ‘Gueto de Gent’ and ‘Karma’… and that’s how everything started.”
