“They only want you when you’re seventeen,
when you’re twenty-one, you’re no fun.
They take a Polaroid and let you go,
say they’ll let you know,
so come on.”
‘Seventeen‘, the first single of Ladytron’s second album ‘Light & Magic’ got a Soulwax remix in 2002. Dave and Steph gave the orginal track, with its minimal synth backing track, a completely different sound as if it was played by a live (rock) band. Five years later, when Soulwax performed their remixes live, ‘Seventeen’ fitted right in the live set.
Ladytron are Helen, Mira, Daniel and Ruben (who left in 2023) and were formed in Liverpool in 1999. Around 2000 / 2001 Dave and Steph played the video of their track ‘Playgirl’ a lot on their weekly @lter8 tv show on TMF, which was broadcasted in Belgium and The Netherlands.
I remember it took me quite some time to get my hands on the 12″ with the Soulwax remix back in 2002. There was no discogs yet, we didn’t really used eBay yet and ordering records internationally was not something that everyone did back then. The Soulwax remix of ‘Seventeen’ was released on the CD single, a couple of 12″ versions and as a bonus track on a few versions of the album ‘Light & Magic’. My favorite is probably the small 3″ promo CD, that was released by the British Council in China.
