Every Thursday I look back to the past.
For over 25 years, I have met Soulwax fans from all over the world. In real life at their concerts, but also talking or chatting to people online. There was a very active fan community back in the zeroes on social media, but the most dedicated fans found their online hangout on my a Soulwax forum on soulwax.info
But the age of ‘fan forums’ came to an end, and at the moment we have the Soulwax reddit and Soulwax discord server were we hang out.
One of those fans I got in touch with was Dmitri from Russia, who became – just like me- an avid collector of all things Soulwax related and was very active in the online fan community.
So when Dmitri and his wife came over to Belgium in 2017 to attend the Soulwax show at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp, I was able to introduce them to Dave and Steph, his musical heroes. From what I can remember, the Dewaeles were intrigued to meet someone who came all the way from Russia to see them play.
Fast forward about half a year later, and Dmitri told me he had a surprise for me. A gift to thank me, which obviously he didn’t need to do. And so this package arrived all the way from Russia, and it contained this unbelievable beautiful matryoshka doll of the band!
It was made by a local artist and Dmitri provided all the info to get everything just perfect. And the details are incredible: Steph holding the ‘From DEEWEE’ head, Dave with a synth, Stefaan with a bass guitar, the three drummers holding their drums sticks and Laima – the smallest but cutest piece of the matryoshka doll – holding a microphone.
It is truly the most unique and special gift I have ever received!
Due to the current situation in the world, we haven’t met since Despacio at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 2019. But I sincerly hope there will come a time to reunite at a Soulwax gig, DEEWEE party or Despacio night.
