If you want to celebrate the 50th edition of Belgium’s most famous rock festival, who you gonna call?
No, not the Ghostbusters. You call the two guys who have played your festival 14 times before: David & Stephen Dewaele.
And so, 2manydjs had the honour to close this years Rock Werchter festival on Sunday (or Monday morning by the time they started). Their task: play a 45 minute live set and try to play as much bands and artists from all the Rock Werchter line-ups from the previous 50 years.
And boy did they succeed!
Only a few moments after headliner Olivia Rodrigo left the main stage, 2manydjs rose above the crowd in the middle of the field. On both sides of the booth, on both screens next to main stage and on a large screen in the middle of the main stage they showed the live animations.
Of course they had to start with Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel”, just like they did in 2004 when 2manydjs closed the same main stage at Rock Werchter – after Bowie had to cancell his headline slot.
And that was the start of a mashup masterclass, mixing 92 (!) tracks in 45 minutes! It was like “Hang The DJ / As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt II” all over again!
I might say, this was one of the best dj sets I have ever heard or seen by them EVER. Noone in the world can mix so many tracks in such a genious way as the Dewaele brothers can. Twenty-five years ago they had to do it with remixes, 12″ versions, a capella verions, and Apple Power Mac and Pro Tools.
Nowadays anyone can automatically create instrumental versions, seperate stems but as Dave & Steph demonstrated: their encyclopedic knowledge of music history is their advantage when making an incredible mix like this.
They had to create a lot of new visuals for this live show. We saw a couple of animated covers they have used many times in the past, but for the new visuals they used AI to bring the covers “to life”. And it worked! We saw Kylie Minogue dancing to the Soulwax Kyuss version of “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” or Undertones cheering and jumping on their own album cover during “Teenage Kicks”.
