Every Thursday I Look Back To The Past
TMF (short for The Music Channel) was an MTV like channel that broadcasted in Belgium and The Netherlands. The Flemish version was launched in 1998 and Dave & Steph had their own show called ‘@lter8’.
But today I am not going to write about @lter8, because only a week ago something interesting showed up on youtube. TMF have launched an official channel about a year ago, and they’ve been uploading stuff from the past.
Like this 2 part video of ‘An Tour with Soulwax’ where VJ An Lemmens travelled to Leeds and Belfast to hang out with the band. This was in 2006, when Nite Versions took off and they started their ‘Radio Soulwax’ shows. This meant they would perform Nite Versions, do a 2manydjs set after and have friends like Tiga, Erol Alkan, Digitalism and many more join them on tour.
Because the video is in Dutch, I’ll give you some highlights. Steve talks about moving back to Ghent, after living in New York for seven years when he was married to Tracy Bonham. He came back to Ghent because Dave and Steph asked him to join Soulwax again.
In the second part of the video, Stephen talks about being on the road all the time. This was at the height of the ‘Part Of The Weekend Never Dies‘ hysteria, where they only spend a couple of days a month at home.
Here’s the press release from that tour and two ads designed by Trevor Jacksons
RADIO SOULWAX
presents ‘Nite Versions’ Live 2 ManyDj’s
plus special guests to be announced.
SOULWAX have announced that they will play their unique RADIO SOULWAX clubnight to cities across the UK this spring, including a special date at Dublin’s Ambassador Theatre April 12th, in support of their massively acclaimed ‘Nite Versions’ album released late last year on [PIAS] Recordings.
Just as in their 2 Many DJs guise, they have brought you a new sound in clubland and a new party aesthetic to the tired art of mix compilations, Radio Soulwax nights will bring a selection of the world’s finest live acts/DJs together for a series of genre splicing, news making and cutting edge club experiences curated by the pair. The first Radio Soulwax tour was a huge success, selling out huge venues across Europe during 2005 bringing together artists & DJs like Tiga, Justice, Erol Alkan and Vitalic to name but a few, into one bombastic experience. The tours success was recently celebrated with its own Mixmag covermount CD, which cut together many of the acts performing and is already being hailed as perhaps their best free CD to date.
For these March/April shows they will bring the full Soulwax live Nite Versions experience, their incomparable 2manydjs alter egos, plus an amazing supporting line-up that will include much of dance music’s hottest properties including the likes of Who Made Who, Headman, The Presets, Simian Mobile Disco to venues across blighty, whilst for the London leg they will take over Canvas for a special Easter Weekend extravaganza that will see them curate a fuller line up set to include labelmate Tiga in what ranks as one of the best line-ups in recent history.
The ‘Nite Versions’ album featured brand new interpolations of tracks inspired by and taken from their highly acclaimed ‘Any Minute Now’ album and was inspired by the idea of extending and expanding a song to make it work on the dancefloor and on the 12” format – a la bands like Duran Duran, Talking Heads, The Human League and many of the club pioneers of the 1980’s and was seeped with praise upon its release late last year.
“A Muscular, Glamorous record that perfectly encapsulates the excitement of modern underground clubbing.”- NME
