Last weekend Despacio made it’s debut in Belgium for two nights at Wintercircus in Ghent.
Due to an annoying eye infection, I only went to the second night. The party started at 4 pm and ended a bit after 10 pm. It’s always weird going to a party in the afternoon, especially on a Sunday. Luckily the weather outside was pretty bad, so no regrets spending the afteroon indoors. Though it was a bit weird that you were not allowed to get out of the venue once you were in.
It had been nearly five years since my last Despacio, which was a Nile Rodgers’ Meltdown at London’s Royal Festival Hall. A lot has happened in the world since then, but seeing and hearing the Despacio soundsystem again brought back great memories.
I met a lot of old friends on the dance floor and made new friends! During the last five years, there have been a few Depacios in the USA at festivals like Coachella and Ill Points. And thanks to reddit and discord, a devoted group of fans from all over the world have become a new fan community online.
So it was great meeting people from different countries who made the trip to Belgium. Big shout out to all of you!
Dave, Steph and James decided not to play the same records on both nights. Which ment a few Despacio classics – like Sylvester’s ‘You Make Me Feel’ or The Bee Gees’ ‘You Should Be Dancing’ – were only played on Saturday.
Luckily the ultimate Despacio track ‘Like An Eagle’ (see my previous post) was the only record they played twice.
Check reddit for the incredible list of songs that were played on Saturday and Sunday.
Despacio was and still is happiness. For me, it’s not just about the music or the sound – it’s also connecting with people who share the same passion for this project and the people behind it.
thanks to Stijn for some of the pics!
