Soulwax live at Het Depot (Leuven, BE – Aug 8, 2024)

Last night, Soulwax played an intimate gig at Het Depot, Leuven, in their home country Belgium to gear up for the upcoming summer tour.
This tour starts in Barcelona on August 10 and ends twenty days later in Lisbon. Two more dates are scheduled in California in September.

Leo Vincent, who supported the band earlier this year, had the honour of opening. This time Vincent had brought two additional musicians with him on stage, which made his show a bit more dynamic. Expect a release of his music on DEEWEE in the near future!

Meanwhile the room temperature was rising, in anticipation of the gig. But also because it’s summer in Belgium and a lack of good airconditioning, this would turn out to be one of the hottest Soulwax show’s I’ve ever attended.

In terms of the stage setup, nothing had really changed from the shows earlier this year. “It’s been six months since we last did this” Steph said at the start, but besides a few minor technical glitches all went well.

The setlist was tweaked a little bit. ‘Hot Like Sahara’ and ‘Idiots In Love’ were again at the beginning of the set. ‘New Earth Time’ had a different ending and one new song was played for the very first time. It was named ‘EMS play’ on the setlist, but listening to the lyrics I’d say that ‘Give Me A Reason’ is more likely that the song could be called in the future. It started slowly before getting into Justice / Daft Punk territory.

The venue had turned into a boiler room by now, but people were really getting into it – not obvious for a Belgian crowd on a Thursday night. For the encores we got their 1998 track ‘Conversation Intercom’ which is a bit of a treat because they rarely played it in the shows earlier this year. Igor, Aurora and Blake gave it all on the drums one more time during a heavy ending of ‘Goodnight Tranmission’.
